Goverdhan Puja is also called Annakut or Annakot and falls on Pratipada of the Kartik Month. The day is dedicated to worshipping Lord Krishna and Govardhan Parvat (Hill).
Devotees on this day prepare 56 varieties (Chappan Bhog) of dishes and offer them as Annakut (mountain of food) as a way to express their gratitude and devotion.
It is mainly performed to seek the divine blessings for protection, prosperity, and overall well-being. Peace with nature is the other lesson in the ceremony. One day, Lord Krishna picked up the Govardhan Hill on his little finger in order to protect the folks of Braj from heavy rain.
The event changed the adoration of divine beings to nature, such as mountains, forests and cows that nourish us. Goverdhan Puja is widespread in North India and has a large following in Mathura, Vrindavan, as well as in adjoining places.

Govardhan Puja is a significant Hindu festival that is celebrated days after Diwali. It is performed to honour Lord Krishna, who lifted the Govardhan Hill to protect villagers from torrential rain.
The ritual signifies the gratitude towards the divine protection of nature and cow worship.
It is a process consisting of several steps with Vedic accuracy and faith:
1. Giriraj Sthapana: The fabricated image of Mount Goverdhan is made by the use of cow dung and adorned with flowers, lamps and colours.
2. Abhishek & Puja: A religious bath is given to the Shila using such things as milk, curd, and honey by reciting a Vedic mantra to draw the gods.
3. Annakut Offering: Annakut means “Mountain of Food.” A wide variety of dishes, often over 56, is offered to the Lord as a gesture of gratitude.
4. Puja of Cows (Gau): Cows are washed and decorated with garlands. Special offerings and prayers are made in their honor recognizing the incarnation of the Mother Earth.
5. Parikrama: Devotees go around the Govardhan hills singing bhajans and hymns to reduce the sins of the past and as a sign of devotion.
6. Puja and Aarti: Flowers, incense stick, Annakut and lamp are presented to the image of Mount Govardhan. A maha aarti is performed while singing devotional songs.
7. Distribute Prasad: To conclude the puja, an annakut in the form of prasad is distributed among all the family members, friends, neighbours, and the needy people.
