The Gateway to Liberation: A Guide to Bharani Shraddha Puja

In Hindu tradition, honouring our ancestors is believed to be one of the sacred duties that strengthens the foundation of the family.

While each Tithi is dedicated to paying gratitude to our lineage, Bharani Shraddha Puja is gold opportunity for those looking to offer peace to a departed soul.

It becomes even more important when done in the Bharani Nakashtra, which is a constellation associated with change and liberation. Now, let’s learn a bit more about this puja.

What is Bharani Shraddha Puja?

Bharani Shraddha Puja is a specialized ritual conducted during the Bharani Nakshatra, which falls during the Pitru Paksha.

This day is said to be ruled by Lord Yama, who is the celestial deity of dharma and death.

As Lord Yama rules this lunar mansion, performing Sharddha during this period is highly effective to guide the departed soul towards liberation with ease.

How is it performed?

The Bharani Shraddha Puja involves a number of steps that need to be accomplished with devotion and a clean heart.

Step 1: Sankalp – Declaration of Intent

Begin the puja by performing Sankalp — a formal declaration of your intention to honor your ancestors. Announce the names and gotra of the departed souls you wish to remember.

Step 2: Invocation of Pitru Devatas

Invoke the ancestral deities (Pitru Devatas) with proper mantras. Since Bharani Nakshatra is ruled by Lord Yama, special prayers are offered to him for ensuring smooth passage of the departed soul.

Step 3: Pind Daan – Offering of Rice Balls

Prepare rice balls mixed with black sesame seeds (til) and offer them as Pind Daan. This offering symbolizes physical nourishment and spiritual sustenance for the departed soul.

Step 4: Tarpan – Water Offering

Perform Tarpan by offering water infused with Kusha grass and sesame seeds in the direction of the ancestors. This ritual is meant to quench the spiritual thirst of the departed souls.

Step 5: Havan (Optional) – Sacred Fire Ritual

Optionally, perform a Thila Homam (fire ritual using black sesame seeds) to multiply the spiritual benefit of the Shraddha ceremony and resolve Pitru Dosha.

Step 6: Brahmin Bhojan and Dakshina

Conclude the ceremony by offering food (Brahmin Bhojan) to a qualified Pandit along with Dakshina (offering/fee). This act completes the ritual and ensures the blessings reach the departed soul.

Step 7: Pitru Shanti Prarthana – Final Prayer

Offer the final prayers (Pitru Shanti Prarthana) seeking peace and liberation for ancestors and well-being for the entire family. Close the puja with Aarti.
