Jagadhatri Puja is a sacred Hindu festival dedicated to Goddess Jagadhatri, a benevolent form of Goddess Durga who is worshipped as the “Sustainer of the World.”
It is celebrated on Shukla Navami of the Kartik month, a few days after Kali Puja, and is especially popular in West Bengal, particularly in Chandannagar and Krishnanagar.
The puja is conducted to seek the blessings of Goddess Jagadhatri for stability, wisdom, protection, and the removal of ignorance and evil forces from one’s life.
Based on the scale of celebration, there are two common forms of Jagadhatri Puja performed:
As every custom differs by region, the Vedic standard Jagadhatri Puja follows the steps below:
1. Auspicious Muhurat: The puja should be completed on a “Shubh Muhurat” estimated based on the Hindu Lunar Calendar (Panchang), typically during Navami Tithi of Kartik Shukla Paksha.
2. Sankalp and Ganesh Puja: The Pandit begins with a formal Sankalp, invoking the devotee’s name and Gotra, followed by a brief invocation to Lord Ganesha to remove obstacles.
3. Kalash Sthapana: A kalash filled with holy water is established, and Goddess Jagadhatri is invoked into the idol or photo with Vedic mantras.
4. Shodashopachar Puja: Sixteen traditional offerings, including flowers, sindoor, and sweets, are made to honour the goddess as the protector and sustainer of the universe.
5. Havan (Holy Fire): A sacred fire ritual is performed with specific mantras dedicated to Goddess Jagadhatri, invoking her blessings for wisdom and protection.
6. Aarti and Prasad: The ceremony concludes with Aarti, followed by the distribution of Prasad among family members and devotees.
Devotees worship Goddess Jagadhatri, the sustainer of the world, for her blessings. According to tradition, the puja is believed to bring:

Jagadhatri Puja holds special significance in West Bengal, particularly in Chandannagar and Krishnanagar, where it is celebrated with grand community pandals, illuminations, and processions rivaling Durga Puja in scale.
Jagadhatri is considered a benevolent form of Goddess Durga, worshipped as the sustainer and protector of the world. While Durga Puja celebrates the victory of good over evil through Mahishasura Mardini, Jagadhatri Puja focuses on stability, wisdom, and the nurturing aspect of the goddess.
A priest is not mandatory, but having an experienced pandit helps ensure that all Vedic rituals, mantras, and ceremonies are performed correctly, which is especially beneficial for those unfamiliar with the puja process.
