Understanding Mahamrityunjaya Jaap

Mahamrityunjaya Jaap, also known as the “Maha-mritunjaya Mantra,” is one of the most powerful healing rituals in Hinduism.

Rooted deeply in Vedic tradition, the life-storing prayer is believed to help conquer the fear of death and rejuvenate the physical and spiritual body.

Let’s have a look at this small guide explaining more about the Mahamrityunjaya Jaap and how it is performed.

How is the Mahamrityunjaya Jaap Performed?

Conducting this Jaap requires following strict vedic protocols to ensure the maximum benefits.

Usually, it is conducted by a team of learned pandits who keep a certain rhythm and sincerity while performing the ritual.

  • Ganpati Puja: Like other pujas or jaap, it also starts with the offering of a prayer to Lord Ganesha for the successful completion of the ritual without any hurdles.
  • Sankalap (A sacred vow): By holding water in the right hand, the devotee takes a vow to perform puja with faith and sincerity and mentions the purpose.
  • Abhishek and Shiva Puja: A holy bath is performed by continuously pouring water, milk, curd, or more over the Shiva Lingam while chanting certain mantras. After which, offerings of flowers, sweets, chandan, Bilva leaves, and incense sticks are made.
  • Mahamrityunjaya Mantra Chanting: Now, pandits will begin rhythmic recitation of the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra. It is usually done 108 times, 11,000 times, or the complete 1.25 Lakh (Sava Lakh ) times using Rudraksha mala.
  • Maha Havan and Purna Ahuti: A fire ceremony is conducted, and items such as Ghee and some herbs are used to increase the power of mantras and to clean up the air.
  • Aarti and Prasad Distribution: To conclude the ritual, a ghee lamp is lit up to do the last aarti by singing a devotional hymn. And, the holy ash (Bhasma) from havan is applied on the forehead of the devotee, and prasad is shared with all.

Vedic Reference: The marriage ceremony is primarily based on the Vivaha Sukta from the Rigveda (Book 10, Hymn 85), which describes the divine marriage of Surya (daughter of the Sun) and is considered the prototype of all Hindu marriages.
