Pind Daan Puja

Pind Daan Puja is a sacred Hindu ritual in which pindas, round offerings made of cooked rice, barley flour, sesame seeds and ghee, are offered to departed ancestors along with water and mantras. The meaning of Pind Daan comes from its words: “pind” is the round offering and “daan” is the act of giving.

The significance of Pind Daan lies in the belief that it nourishes the soul of the departed and helps it find peace on its onward journey. It is also seen as a duty of descendants toward their ancestors, as described in texts like the Garuda Purana.

Pind Daan after death is traditionally begun as part of the last rites and is repeated during Shradh, especially in Pitru Paksha. Many families also choose to perform it at sacred places such as Gaya.

• Pitru Paksha: the 16-day period for ancestors, considered the most auspicious time for Pind Daan and Shradh
• Sarva Pitru Amavasya: the last day of Pitru Paksha, ideal when the exact tithi of passing is unknown
• Monthly Amavasya: the new moon day, associated with offerings to ancestors
• Death Anniversary Tithi: the lunar date on which the person passed away
• After a Recent Passing: as part of last rites, following family tradition

• Gaya (Gayaji), Bihar: considered the most important place for Pind Daan, on the banks of the Phalgu river. According to the Ramayana tradition, Sita performed Pind Daan for King Dashrath here.
• Trimbakeshwar, Maharashtra: near the source of the Godavari, associated with rituals like Narayan Nagbali and Tripindi Shradh.
• Kashi (Varanasi), Uttar Pradesh: on the ghats of the Ganga, where Pind Daan is performed for ancestors’ peace. It is known as pinda pradanam in South India.
• Brahma Kapal, Badrinath, Uttarakhand: on the banks of the Alaknanda, believed to help ancestors attain liberation.
