Putrakameshti Homam

Derived from the Sanskrit terms ‘Putra’ and ‘Kameshti’, the homam is a dedicated fire ritual to Lord Vishnu, the preserver of life. Unlike normal prayers, this is a highly personalised ceremony performed to reduce the ‘Kshetram’ and the ‘Beeja’.

It aims to eliminate ancestral dosha or planetary effects that can cause hindering conception.

The Putrakameshti homam is a legendary ‘Kamya-Karma’ ritual, popularly conducted by King Dasharatha in the Ramayan to beget Lord Ram and his brothers.

It acts as a spiritual bridge for couples seeking the blessings of children, mainly when facing unexplained delays or problems.

This is more than a prayer for a child; it is a ritual to invite a noble, healthy, and virtuous soul into the family lineage, ensuring future generations carry forward a legacy of knowledge and strength.

The homam follows a scriptural sequence to ensure the ritual’s divine energy is invoked correctly.

It begins with Maha Sankalp, where the couple takes a solemn vow of devotion and purpose under the pandit’s guidance.

This is followed by Kalash Sthapana, where a sacred pot is consecrated to invoke Lord Vishnu’s presence.

The centre of the ceremony is Agni Mukham, where ghee and sacred wood are offered into the fire kund.

Purusha Suktam and Santan Gopal mantras are recited with precise rhythm, followed by Agni Pradakshina, where the couple circles the fire to affirm their unity.

The ritual concludes with Purnahuti, where sacred payasam, similar to the offering made to the queens of Ayodhya, is sanctified by mantras and consumed by the couple as prasad.

Timing plays a key role in the effectiveness of this homam. We recommend these auspicious windows:

• Pushyami Nakshatra days: considered the most powerful for this ritual
• Karthika Maasam Mondays: especially auspicious for Vishnu-centred homams
• Sivaratri and Karthika Purnima
• Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are generally preferred over other weekdays.
• Pournami (full moon) and Panchami tithis

We share these guidelines with every couple before the ceremony:

• Avoid non-vegetarian food for 3 days before the puja
• Continue avoiding non-veg for up to 6 months after prasad
• Only the husband and wife participate in the core rituals
• Women may participate from the 8th day after their menstrual cycle
• Wait 12 months before performing this homam after a death in the family
• Wear traditional attire — dhoti or kurta for men, saree or salwar with pallu for women
• Keep a light sattvic diet on the day of the ceremony
