The term Udaka means ‘water’ and shanti means ‘peace’ in Sanskrit. The ritual of Udaka shanti puja is a vedic cleansing ritual in which sacred water is consecrated with the regular chanting of hymns from the Rigveda, Yajurveda, and Atharvaveda.
The holy water is filled in a copper vessel used to invoke divine energy, and the sanctified water is then sprinkled on the participants and environment to remove negativity, remove doshas, and seek blessings. It’s mainly in South India for housewarming ceremonies, weddings, the thread ceremony, and recovery from disease.

Among the multiple sacred rituals deepened into hindu tradition, Udaka shanti puja has a unique purifying role.
Mentioned in vedic scriptures, the timeless ceremony improves the spiritual power of water and mantras to purify, safeguard, and restore balance in the home, body, and soul.
1. Kalash sthapana: Fill a copper or clay pot with sacred water. Keep mango leaves on top of it and coconut. Invoke all holy rivers into this water with specific mantras, making it a spiritual centre of the puja.
2. Ganesh puja: Honour Lord Ganesh to eliminate problems. Offer flowers, incense, and sweets to receive his blessings and assure the puja is complete without any disturbance.
3. Sankalpa: Start the puja by mentioning your name, gotra, and the objective of performing the puja in the presence of a qualified, trained pandit. The declaration caters for your purpose with the ritual.
4. Varuna Puja: Recite the Varun suktam to seek lord Varun’s blessings, the vedic god of water and cosmic order, into the kalasha. This is the key part of the puja – charging the water with divinity.
5. Vedic Chanting: Pandit consistently chants sacred hymns – consisting of the Shanti path and the Purush suktam over the kalash. It infuses the water with healing powers and spiritual energy.
6. Prokshana: The pandit then sprinkles the cleansed water on all participants using a bundle of mango leaves or darbha grass. It purifies every corner of negativity and brings peace.
7. Mangalarati & Prasad: Complete the puja by waving a lit lamp before the lord and share prasad and holy water with all devotees as a final step of divine blessings.
Vedic Reference: The marriage ceremony is primarily based on the Vivaha Sukta from the Rigveda (Book 10, Hymn 85), which describes the divine marriage of Surya (daughter of the Sun) and is considered the prototype of all Hindu marriages.
