In India, the relationship between an individual and their vehicle is something that is far beyond mere utility.
A vehicle is considered a trusted partner that carries you safely through life’s journeys. Hence, it deserves to be welcomed with gratitude and divine blessings.
Vehicle puja is an important ritual that shows the sentiment beautifully, merging faith, culture, and everyday life into one powerful ritual.
1. Select a Good Day and Time: Consult a Hindu calendar (panchang) or a priest to choose an appropriate muhurat. Saturdays and Tuesdays are not preferred, and Wednesday and Thursday mornings are favourable.
2. Wash and de-ice the car: Wash up the car well and adorn it with new marigold garlands, mango leaves and colourful ribbons. A clean car is a symbol of respect and willingness to be blessed by the gods.
3. Prepare the Puja Articles: Put a tiny idol or picture of Lord Ganesha by the car. Prepare necessary puja material: kumkum (vermillion), turmeric, rice grains (akshat), flowers, coconut, incense sticks, camphor, a diya, and betel leaves.
4. Perform the Ritual: The head of the family or a priest starts with Sankalp, after which Ganesha is invoked. The vehicle will have a kumkum and turmeric tilak on its front or bonnet.
The coconut is smashed in front of the car as a representation of eliminating barriers and bad vibes.
5. Aarti and Prasad Distribution: The puja is completed with a lamp aarti that goes around the vehicle, and then prasad is distributed to everyone present.
Vedic Reference: The marriage ceremony is primarily based on the Vivaha Sukta from the Rigveda (Book 10, Hymn 85), which describes the divine marriage of Surya (daughter of the Sun) and is considered the prototype of all Hindu marriages.
