He was ordered by his father, Jamadgani, to kill his own mother, Renuka, to give proof of his obedience. Respecting his father’s order, Parshuram carried out the act and killed his mother.
Though later Jamadgani restored Renuka to life with the help of divine powers. But Parshuram felt guilty and was scared of the sin of matricide (matru-hatya).
Seeking freedom from this grave karma, he travelled around the indian subcontinent in search of soul purification.
After travelling for so long, the legends say that Parshuram reached the banks of the sacred Lohit River of Arunachal Pradesh.
Seeing that river, he took a bath in it with the intention of clearing his sins, but the axe (parshu) he had remained in his hand suddenly fell, and the sin of matricide miraculously fell away.
