It is said that on this day, Maa Ganga descended from heaven to earth and merged into the locks of Lord Shiva.

Significance of Ganga Saptami

According to mythological scriptures, on the seventh day of the Shukla Paksha of the month of Vaishakh, Maa Ganga reached the locks of Lord Shiva from heaven.

Therefore, this day is celebrated as Ganga Saptami. The day on which Ganga originated is known as Ganga Jayanti (Vaishakh Shukla Saptami), and the day on which Ganga descended on earth is known as Ganga Dussehra (Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami).

  3. After that, wear clean clothes and take Ganga water in a copper vessel. You can use a copper Kalash for this. Cover this vessel with a red cloth.
  4. After this, tie a sacred thread on the pot, then make a Swastika on it. You can make a Swastika with red or yellow sandalwood.
  5. Now, you have to install this vessel on the chowki. The Kalash filled with Gangajal will be worshipped as a symbol of Maa Ganga.
  6. After this, you have to offer rice, incense, flowers, offerings, sweets, fruits, etc., to Maa Ganga with devotion.
  7. Finally, light incense and recite Shri Ganga Sahasranama Stotra. Along with this, chant the Vedic mantras of Ganga Ji.
  8. Chant the mantras of Maa Ganga. Recite the hymns of Maa Ganga and Ganga Chalisa.
  9. At the end of the worship of Maa Ganga, do the Aarti of Maa Ganga and offer her food.
  10. After this, distribute the Prasad among other family members.
