In ancient times, King Sagar ruled Ayodhya with wisdom. He had two queens, Keshini and Sumati. While Keshini had a son named Asamanja, Sumati was blessed with 60,000 sons.
To establish his supremacy, King Sagar initiated the Ashwamedha Yagna. However, Lord Indra, fearing the King’s power, stole the sacrificial horse and hid it inside the hermitage of Kapil Muni.
When the horse went missing, the 60,000 sons were sent to retrieve it. They eventually reached Kapil Muni’s ashram. Seeing the horse, they mistakenly accused the meditating sage of theft, disturbing his deep austerity.
As Kapil Muni opened his eyes, the intense spiritual fire of his gaze instantly consumed the 60,000 sons, reducing them to heaps of ash in a single moment.
Later, Anshuman (the grandson of Sagar) found the remains at the ashram. There, Garuda Dev appeared and delivered a divine message: these souls could only attain Moksha (salvation) if their ashes were cleansed by the celestial waters of the River Ganga.
For generations, the kings of Ayodhya—Anshuman and his son Dileep—meditated to bring Ganga to Earth, but failed. Finally, it was Bhagiratha, the son of Dileep, who took a solemn vow to liberate his ancestors.
Bhagiratha travelled to the Gokarna Tirtha and performed extreme penance. His devotion pleased Lord Brahma, who granted the wish for Ganga to descend. However, her velocity was too great for the Earth to handle.
Lord Brahma suggested that only Lord Shiva (Shankar) could control her force. Bhagiratha then began a second period of penance, standing on one toe for years to appease Mahadev.
Lord Shiva, moved by Bhagiratha’s selfless devotion, agreed to help. When Mother Ganga descended with pride and immense power, Shiva caught her in his matted hair (Jatas), taming her current before releasing her gently.
