Katha (Story) of Dev Uthani Ekadashi

Story‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ 1: Lord Vishnu’s Awakening

According‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ to a story, Ashadhi Ekadashi was the day on which Lord Vishnu went into deep sleep, a sleep of Yoga Nidra.

As a result, the whole world was devoid of all the auspicious ceremonies like weddings, housewarming, and new ventures, which were commonly done during the four months of Chaturmas.

It‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ was the day that woke Lord Vishnu from his sleep when Kartik Shukla Ekadashi was recorded. Hence, the day is called Dev Uthani Ekadashi or Prabodhini Ekadashi in the present time.

Once woken up, Goddess Lakshmi met him with worship and inquired about the reason for his sleep.

Vishnu gave her a smile and told her that it was a universal sleep, which has to happen if the universe is going to stay in ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌harmony. With his waking, the universe got its vitality back.

People also lit lamps, worshiped Vishnu, and offered Tulsi leaves to celebrate the day of the restart of all good deeds and auspicious rituals that had been stopped during ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌Chaturmas.

Story 2: King Bali and Lord Vishnu

King Bali, a strong, benevolent ruler, was completely devoted to Lord Vishnu. During the Vamana Avatar, Lord Vishnu took the form of a little Brahmin boy and asked for three steps of land from Bali.

The modest king consented, not quite grasping the fact that the boy was Divine. Then the Lord, with two steps, took over heaven and earth, and putting the third step on Bali’s head, went to Patal Lok.

Bali’s‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ loyalty moved him deeply. Lord Vishnu promised to stay with him in the nether world throughout Chaturmas.

On Dev Uthani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu got up and blessed King Bali with health, wealth, and happiness. This story is allegorical to the victory of these virtues – faith, humility, and ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌truth.

Therefore, devotees commemorate this Ekadashi with conviction that it is an awakening of Lord Vishnu who blesses, drives away the evil forces, and lets all auspicious activities begin ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌again.
