What is Karagre Vasate Lakshmi Sloka and its history?

Karagre Vasate Lakshmi is a morning shloka in our Sanatan way of life. This mantra was typically learned by young children as they began the day and path of the day with a blessing of the mother goddess.

The shloka also pays homage to 3 goddesses:

  • Maa Durga or Parvati – strength, courage, protection.

The mantra is ancient. The meanings of the mantra are also found in ancient Hindu texts such as the Padma Purana and the Skanda Purana.

It was customary, in the past, to worship when greeting the Sun to start the day, and this shloka was also included in the daily routine. The mantra is simple.

We are in charge of our lives, and when we do our work- the work we do with our hands, we can take blessings from the goddesses when we are starting to work – they are benefactors, and success comes along with them.

Karagre Vasate Lakshmi Sloka is dedicated to which Goddess?

“Karagre Vasate Lakshmi” is a verse that pays homage to the three main goddesses of Sanatan Dharma — Maa Lakshmi, Maa Saraswati, and Maa Durga/Parvati.

Karagre Vasate Lakshmi Sloka

This verse is generally practised as a chant to be recited while looking at your hands right after waking in the morning.

1. Maa Lakshmi – Goddess of Wealth and Substance

The first part of the verse, “Karagre Vasate Lakshmi”, means that Maa Lakshmi is situated in the upper part of the hands (the fingers)!

She is with Vishnu and represents the four main aims of life: Dharm (doing what is right), Artha (wealth), Kama (desire), and Moksha (existential freedom).

When you reflect on Lakshmi Ji in the first thing in the morning, you are welcoming blessings of riches, success, happiness, and well-being into your day.

2. Maa Saraswati – Goddess of Learning and Knowledge

The second part, “Karamadhye Saraswati,” means that the Goddess Saraswati is a deity located between the hands (the palms).

She represents knowledge, learning, art, and music! By remembering her in the morning, you become calm-minded and approach your tasks with patience, digestion, and understanding.

3. Maa Parvati – Goddess of Power and Protection

The phrase “Karamule Tu Parvati” means that Parvati resides in the hands, the nethermost part being indicated; wrist region or maybe the ankle region, in addition, the form of Maa Durga as well.

She represents power, courage, protection, and liberation from worries. In recalling her first day, you find strength, confidence, and a sense of being protected.
