According to legend, during the battle between Lord Rama and Ravana, Ravana realized that his army was losing. He got the aid of his elusive brother, Ahiravan.
Ahiravan was a great worshiper of the Goddess Bhavani, and he was also knowledgeable in the occult.
He applied his magic to make the whole army of Lord Rama sleep. In the meantime, he had seized Lord Rama and Lakshmana and brought them to the Patal Lok.
Vibhishana came to know that Ahiravan was behind the attack after a couple of hours, when the illusion had disappeared. He requested Lord Hanumanji to go to Patala Loka to assist Shri Ram and Lakshmana.
At the gates of Patala Lok, he met his son Makardhwaj, defeated him in battle, and returned with the captive Shri Ram and Lakshmana.
Being a devotee of Goddess Bhavani, Ahiravan set five lamps in five directions in honour of Goddess Bhavani.
He had obtained a boon such that he could only be killed by him who would put out all these five lamps at the same time.
To save Rama and Lakshmana from Ahiravan’s clutches, Hanuman ji assumed the five-faced form. These incorporate the powers of Lord Vishnu, Shiva, Narasimha, Varaha, and Hayagriva within himself.
As a result, he killed Ahiravan by extinguishing all five lamps simultaneously. Lord Rama and Lakshmana were then freed from his captivity.
