Dakshinamurthy Stotram: Do you know the Dakshinamurthy form of Lord Shiva? Why is Lord Shiva known as the Dakshinamurthy, and what is this southern idol stotra?

It was composed by Adi Shankaracharya. This stotra contains 10 verses written in Sanskrit. The stotram is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

What is Dakshinamurthy Stotram?

The Dakshinamurthy Stotram is a religious hymn dedicated to Lord Shiva. The stotra was composed by Adi Shankaracharya.

Lord Shiva is called Dakshinamurti and is in the form of a Guru. Dakshinamurthy Stotra is a light stotra and a perfect amalgamation of knowledge and devotion.

This form of Lord Shiva represents him as a teacher of Yoga, music, and wisdom, and gives exposition on the scriptures. Lord Shiva is worshipped as the god of art and knowledge, and as Adiyogi.

According to the scriptures, if a person does not have a Guru (teacher), they can consider Lord Dhakshinamurthy as their guru and worship him.

After some time, when he is worthy, he receives a self-realized Guru. Adi Shankaracharya has many writings of great importance, such as Stotras (prayers of Lord Shiva), etc.

However, there is this unique prayer, and it is rather a prayer summarising all the philosophy he taught.

Even during his time, it was complicated, but his disciple, Sureshvaracharya, had to write a commentary on it, which was called Manasollasa.

श्लोक-1

दर्पण में देखे गए नगर के समान, ब्रह्मांड अपने भीतर है। अपने भीतर ऐसे देखना मानो माया से जागा हो, बाहर मानो निद्रा से जागा हो।(तथा) वैसे ही आत्मा में स्थित माया के कारण, अपने से बाहर उत्पन्न हुआ सा देखता है, वह जो जागृति के समय स्वयं को एकमात्र आत्मा के रूप में अनुभव करता है। मैं उन श्री गुरुमूर्ति, दक्षिणामूर्ति को आत्मसमर्पण नमस्कार करता हूँ। (1)

श्लोक- 2

यह संसार उत्पत्ति से पहले बीज के अन्दर अंकुर के समान है, जाति गुण एवं क्रियादि विकल्पों से रहित था, केवल सन्मात्र था, यानि कारण के रूप में ही था, फिर, माया द्वारा देश की कल्पना की गई और कालगणना का विचित्र चित्रण किया गया, जो माया के समान, यहाँ तक कि महायोगी के समान, अपनी इच्छा से विस्तार करता है। मैं उस श्री गुरुमूर्ति, श्री दक्षिणामूर्ति को सादर प्रणाम करता हूँ। (2)

श्लोक- 3

जिसका कंपन ही शाश्वत और निरर्थक प्रतीत होता है, मिथ्या पदार्थों में भी जिस की सत्ता स्फुर्ति है। जो दक्षिणामूर्ति शिवगुरु अपने आश्रित-शरणागत शिष्यों को तत्वमसि ऐसे वेद के महावाक्यों से, सीधे अभेदबोध कराते हैं, जिस आत्मस्वरूप के साक्षात्कार करने से भवसागर में फिर आना नहीं होता है। उन श्रीगुरुमूर्ति-दक्षिणामूर्ति को हमारा नमन है। सर्वात्मना समर्पण है। (3)

श्लोक- 4

जिस प्रकार अनगिनत छिद्रों वाले पात्र में रखा हुआ दीपक पात्र से बाहर प्रकाशमान प्रतीत होता है। ज्ञान, आंखें और अन्य इंद्रियों के माध्यम से आकर्षक रूप से स्पंदित होता है।

उसी प्रकार सम्पूर्ण ब्रह्माण्ड इस प्रकार से प्रकाशित प्रतीत होता है। मैं उन श्री गुरुमूर्ति, श्री दक्षिणामूर्ति को सादर प्रणाम करता हूँ। (4)

श्लोक- 5

कुछ लोग प्राण को ही आत्मा बताते हैं, कुछ दार्शनिक मन एवं इन्द्रियों को भी आत्मा मानते हैं, कुछ बौद्ध आदि क्षणिक विज्ञान एवं शून्य को ही आत्मा मानते हैं।

जो माया के मोहक खेल से उत्पन्न सभी भयंकर भ्रांतियों को दूर करते हैं – उन लोगों में, जो बौद्धिक रूप से स्त्री-बालक-अंधे-मूर्ख की तरह निर्दोष हैं , माया की विलास शक्ति द्वारा कल्पित महान मोहों के नाश करने वाले, इस महाव्यामोह का संहार करने वाले उन श्रीगुरुमूर्ति-दक्षिणामूर्ति को हमारा नमन है। (5)

श्लोक- 6

जो समस्त इन्द्रियों के कार्यों को समेटकर सुषुप्ति अवस्था में प्रवेश कर जाता है, माया-अविद्या के आवरण से आच्छादित होने के कारण स्पष्ट रूप से प्रकाशमान न होने पर भी, राहु द्वारा ग्रहण किए गए सूर्य और चंद्रमा के समान प्रकाशमान न होने पर भी सुषुप्ति में आत्मा है, जो जागृति के समय पूर्व-स्वप्न के रूप में पहचाना जाता है। मैं उस श्री गुरु-मूर्ति, श्री दक्षिणा-मूर्ति को सादर प्रणाम करता हूँ। (6)

श्लोक- 7

बचपन, बाल्यावस्था, कौमार, यौवन, प्रौढ़ एवं वृद्धावस्था और जाग्रत्, स्वप्न, सुषुप्ति एवं मूर्छा आदि इन सभी अवस्थाओं के बदलने पर भी जो सदा ही उक्त सभी अवस्थाओं में “मैं” के रूप में आंतरिक रूप से प्रकट करता है. वे अपने भक्तों के समक्ष एक सुंदर मुहर द्वारा स्वयं को प्रकट करते हैं। उन श्रीगुरुमूर्ति श्री दक्षिणामूर्ति भगवान को मेरा यह अभिवादन है। (7)

श्लोक- 8

यह जो वेदान्त प्रतिपाद्य पूर्ण पुरूष है, वही, मायाशक्ति से भ्रम में पड़ा हुआ भटक रहा है, स्वप्न व जाग्रत् अवस्था में वह सारे जगत् को कार्य-कारण रूप से स्वामी-सेवक भाव से शिष्य एवं गुरु के रूप से वैसे ही पिता-पुत्र आदि रूप से सर्वत्र भेद रूप में ही देखता है। जिनकी करूणा से यह भेद मिट जाता है, उन श्रीगुरुमूर्ति श्री दक्षिणामूर्ति भगवान को मेरा यह अभिवादन है। (8)

श्लोक- 9

पृथिवी, जल, आग, वायु, आकाश, सूर्य, चन्द्र एवं भोक्ता जीव जैसे 8 रूप वाले, सदाशि की आठ मूर्तियाँ हैं। ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि समस्त चर-अचर प्राणियों से युक्त यह ब्रह्मांड भगवान का अष्टांगिक रूप है।

भगवान के अतिरिक्त विचारणीय और कुछ नहीं है। विचारकों की दृष्टि से तो जिस परम पुरूष व्यापक परमात्मा से भिन्न कुछ भी नहीं है। मैं उन श्री गुरुमूर्ति, श्री दक्षिणामूर्ति को सादर प्रणाम करता हूँ। (9)

श्लोक- 10

इस प्रकार क्योंकि इस दक्षिणामूर्ति नामक स्तोत्र में यह सब आत्मतत्व है, यह सर्वज्ञता के रूप में स्पष्ट है। वेदान्त में जो सार है, वही इस स्तोत्र में कहा गया है। भगवान के पवित्र नाम के श्रवण, ध्यान और कीर्तन से महान महिमा से युक्त सर्वशक्तिमानता स्वयं में दिव्यता होगी।

वह पूर्णता पुनः अष्टगुणी और अबाधित ऐश्वर्य में परिवर्तित हो जाती है। उसी से तो स्वतः ही ईश्वर भाव भी प्राप्त हो जाता है, सर्वात्म भाव ही तो ईश्वर भाव है, फिर अणिमा-महिमा आदि अष्टधा रूपों से परिणत अव्याहत ऐश्वर्य भी अपने आप ही सिद्धयेत् सिद्ध हो जाता है। (10)

Dakshinamurthy Stotram Meaning in English

Verse- 1

Looking into one’s inner self, the world appears like a city in a mirror. When looked at from within one’s soul, this external world (like a dream in sleep, made of Maya) becomes visible within the non-dual soul itself at the time of spiritual awakening of the soul.

I offer my obeisances to that Sri Dakshinamurthy, who awakened this knowledge with his profound silence. (1)

Verse- 2

This world, which is like a sprout inside a seed, is born again and again in many forms by combining with the space and time created by Maya. That great yogi who controls the movements of this world like an illusionist by his mere will.

He who expands like illusion, even like a great yogi, of his own free will, I offer my respectful obeisances unto that Sri Dakshinamurthy as my Guru. (2)

Verse- 3

The very vibration seems to be eternal and reflects the nature of Sat-Chit-Ananda, whose real form appears to be an unreal creation.

He who enlightens his followers by the words of the Vedas, saying, “You are the very essence of Me.

After attaining the direct knowledge of who, a person never again gets trapped in the ocean of birth and death, I salute Sri Dakshinamurthy as my Guru. (3)

Verse- 4

Just as the light of a lamp placed in a vessel with many holes appears to shine from outside the vessel, the entire universe appears to be illuminated by the fact that it knows Him. I offer my respectful obeisances unto that Sri Dakshinamurthy as my Guru. (4)

Verse- 5

Those who consider the body, the life, the senses, the dynamic intelligence, or the absolute void as the meaning of “I” are like a naive girl who, though blind, keeps on uttering their words loudly.

Oh, destroyer of extraordinary delusions imagined by the luxurious power of illusion. I offer my respectful obeisances unto that Shri Guru-murti, the Sri Dakhinamurthy. (5)

Verse- 6

Just as Rahu eclipses the sun and moon because he is covered by illusion, similarly, the sleeping person is revealed when the senses are removed, covered by Maya.

The man asleep is the only one who can withdraw his actions—he who is recognized at the time of awakening.

Salutations to Sri Dakshinamurthy, while imparting knowledge, make us realize that you slept earlier. (6)

Verse- 7

Despite the changing states of infancy, childhood, adolescence, youth, adulthood, old age, waking, dream, deep sleep, and unconsciousness, it always manifests internally as “I” in all these states.

He reveals Himself to His devotees by a beautiful seal. This is my salutation to that Sri Gurumurthy Sri Dakshinamurthy Bhagwan. (7)

Verse- 8

The different relationships that are seen in the world, such as cause and effect, self and master, disciple and teacher, and father and son, etc., all these relationships in dreams and the waking state are created by Maya to confuse the Purusha (soul). Or those who are awake in the forest, O Lord, are deluded by illusion. I bow to my Guru Shri Dakshinamurthy. (8)

Verse- 9

Earth, water, fire, air, sky, sun, moon, and living beings – these eightfold forms of the Supreme Personality of Godhead appear composed of all moving and nonmoving beings.

It is omnipresent. There is nothing else to be thought of apart from God. I bow to Sri Dakshinamurthy, who is my Guru. (9)

Verse- 10

Thus, because this stotra named Dakshinamurthy contains all this Atman, it is clearly omniscient.

By hearing, meditating, and chanting the holy name of the Lord Omniscience, with great glory, one would be divinity itself. That perfection is again transformed into eightfold and unhindered opulence. (10)

Benefits of Chanting Dakshinamurthy Stotram

Dakshinamurthy Stotram, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is to be recited in the morning or evening, i.e., during the Pradosh time.

Care should be taken to be clean before chanting. Wear clean clothes only after bathing and worship him with incense, lamp, and offerings.

Reciting the Dakshinamurthy Stotra in rhythm has a special effect. After the recitation is over, meditate on Lord Shiva.
