Hariyali Teej 2025 is a sacred and rich festival celebrated mainly by married women in North and West India, primarily in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh.

This auspicious festival comes every year on the Tritiya thithi in the shukla paksha during the month of Shravan.
On the holy day of the festival, Hindu women pledge to keep a long day fast without eating or drinking a drop of water.
They worship lord shiva and Goddess Parvati to seek a blissful married life. The day keeps a lot of relevance for the growth residing in the northern part of the country, mainly Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand.
There are three Teej festivals celebrated, of which Hariyali Teej is one of; the other two are Kajari Teej and Haritalika Teej. These are celebrated in the months of Shravan and Bhadrapada.
The word ‘Hariyali’ refers in the Hindi language to the green color or greenery. It’s due to the fact that the festival shows the earth’s lush greenery in the month of monsoon.
The day is observed as the reunion of lord shiva and his beloved consort. At the festival, women worship lord Shiva Belpatra, flowers, fruits, and turmeric-coated rice to the goddess.
The practice is to seek the blessings of the lord to ensure the safety and overall well-being of their husbands.
Hariyali Teej is extremely necessary for all married women when they pray for happiness and prosperity for their happy married life. Few people consider that the Teej fast is even tougher than that of Karwa Chauth.
But, the question is why people keep nirjala fasting, and how it’s connected with lord shiva and Parvati? See the discussion below to know how important it is:
The day is the mark of the reunion of lord shiva with Goddess Parvati after thousands of years of waiting and praying.

Married women honor lord shiva for their husband’s good health, success, and long life.
They thought that honoring Shiva and Parvati on the day would bring love and peace to their married life. Also, unmarried girls pray to get a good husband like lord shiva.
Hariyali Teej comes on the third day of Sawan or Shravan. It depicts the beginning of the monsoon season, which is why married females wear green and enjoy swinging from trees on this day. The green color represents abundance, positivity, and good health.

5. Breaking the Fast (28th July)
The next day, women broke the fast after performing puja and seeking blessings from elders or the teej mata.
As per the Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati took 108 births to win the heart of lord shiva. She wanted to marry him.
In her 108th life, she was born as the daughter of Himawan (king of mountains). She was the incarnation of Goddess Sati.
When she reached the age of marriage, her father found lord vishnu to marry her. Already dedicated to lord shiva, Goddess Parvati ran into a forest with the help of her friend.
To honor lord shiva, Goddess Parvati started to observe rigorous penance in the mountains.
She keeps a nirjala fast in bad weather conditions. She prayed for many years, seeing this lord Shiva finally accept her as his wife.
They tied the knot when lord shiva knew his love for her, and since then, she has been known as ‘Teej Mata’, or ‘Hartalika Mata’.
Therefore, the day marks the occasion of their marriage and is celebrated by females in the northern part of the country.
Hariyali Teej is a reminder of the divine union and marriage of lord shiva and Parvati.
In Hinduism, marriage is a beautiful relationship, and the occasion shows the unwavering devotion of married women to their husbands.
They keep a rigorous fast to bless them with a happy married life, representing their selfless wishes for long life, and the joy of their partners.
Hariyali Teej is celebrated by the Hindu women, but in a few states of India, it’s observed especially:
Rajasthan
Uttar Pradesh & Bihar
Madhya Pradesh & Haryana
Rather than Hariyali Teej, there are two other Teej festivals celebrated by women in Hinduism.
Kajari teej, known as Kajli teej or boodhi teej, is deeply rooted in emotional and cultural customs.
Observed in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, MP, and Rajasthan. It is performed by heartfelt kajari folk music that defines the monsoon’s charm and the yearning of women for their spouses.
Customs included in the teej are worshipping lord shiva, Goddess Parvati, and the moon.
Married females also get sinjara from their mother’s home, boosting familial bonds and rituals.
Hartalika Teej commemorates Parvati’s devotion and women’s powers. The word hartalika means ‘Harat’ (abduction) and aalika means ‘ female friend ‘.
That means referring to how Goddess Parvati’s friend helped her to run from an unwanted marriage alliance and execute penance in privacy.
Likewise, women keep nirjala fast and please idols of lord Shiva and Parvati, also create idols using clay or sand.
The festival is loaded with prayers, solah shirngar, mehendi rituals, and heartfelt devotion. Thus, it’s believed to drive marital happiness, health, and divine offerings.
