According to the Hindu Scriptures, there are five mudras of Panchopchar Puja. With the help of these mudras, the gods and goddesses bear the worship material.
The offerings of these materials are done according to their names, that is Gandha Mudra, Pushpa Mudra, Dhoop Mudra, Deep Mudra, and Naivedya Mudra.
For this mudra, you use the fingers and thumbs of both hands to make the Gandha Mudra. It is formed by joining the thumb and little finger together. According to this, first, apply sandalwood (Chandan) to the idol with the ring finger (the finger near the little finger called Anamika). Then take a pinch between the thumb and ring finger of the right hand and offer turmeric and then kumkum at the feet of the deity.
The index finger forms Pushpa Mudra by resting at the base of the thumb. According to this, offer the deity their favourite Pushpa (flowers). For example, Belpatra to Lord Shiva and Durva and red flowers to Lord Ganesha.
Do not offer the flowers on the head of the deity; instead, offer them at their feet. Offer the flowers with the stem facing the deity and the petals facing you.
Place the thumb at the bottom of the index finger to form Dhoop Mudra. While offering incense to god, do not spread your hands; instead, perform Aarti of god with incense or Agarbatti, Dhoopbatti of god’s favourite Fragrance or scent. One should keep in mind that while offering incense, one should see the incense in the shape of ॐ (Om).
During Panchopchar Puja, participants form Deep Mudra by joining the thumb at the bottom of the middle finger. While performing Deep Aarti, one should keep in mind to perform it three times at a slow pace. It is also necessary to keep these things in mind while lighting the lamp or Diya:
In the end, the practitioner forms Naivedya Mudra by joining the thumb with the bottom of the ring finger. Always keep in mind not to serve salt on the plate for Naivedya. Keep the food and water covered before offering Naivedya to the deity.
During this mudra, primarily pray to the god and make a square circle with water on the ground in front of the deity and place a plate of food on it.
