Dhanteras puja is a sacred ritual organized to honor Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera. The ritual is celebrated one day before Diwali. It marks the auspicious beginning of the five-day Diwali celebration.
Dhanteras is celebrated worldwide and by indian groups dedicated to invoking blessings for wealth, health, and prosperity. On the day of the festival, people worship lord Dhanvantari, who is the divine physician, and Goddess Lakshmi, who is the bringer of fortune.
This is believed to ensure well-being and affluence for the good year ahead, making it one of the most auspicious and meaningful traditions in the Hindu calendar. The celebration promotes values of positivity and abundance in both home and business, making its cultural relevance evergreen.
The day is more than just a day to buy gold and silver; it’s a day filled with religious significance. This is also known as ‘Dhantrayodasshi’, which is the first day of the Diwali five-day celebration and is considered an auspicious festival.
The name is derived from two words: ‘Dhan’ means wealth, and ‘Teras’ means the thirteenth day of the lunar calendar. Lord Kubera is worshipped on the day, who is the treasurer of the world, making the festival a celebration of health, wealth, and prosperity.

Significance of Dhanteras Puja
The puja of Dhanteras celebrates the emergence of lord Dhanwantari, who is the god of Ayurveda and health. The Dhanteras puja brings blessings for health, prosperity, and the removal of negativity with rituals like lighting diyas, cleaning homes, decorating the house with rangoli, and buying valuable items like gold and silver.
This is a time for the relatives and families to gather, celebrate, and reinforce the commitment to wealth and well-being, and seek blessings for a positive and abundant year ahead. Hindu followers on the day please the deities to receive their blessings for a happy and wealthy life.
As per the known legend of Samundra manthan, on such a day, the wife of lord vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi, emerged from the sea. Hence, she is worshipped on Trayodashi.
Another story is during Samundra manthan, Lord Dhanwantri, the god of medicine and another form of lord vishnu, emerged from the sea bringing a kalash of Amrit in one hand and a sacred textbook in the other hand.
People also honor the deity, considering as the Vaidya of the gods. He had achieved the wisdom of Ayurveda to help mankind have a disease-free life. Hence, Dhanteras is celebrated as Dhanwantari Jayanti.
In Dhanteras puja, people chant the following mantra 108 times to receive the god's blessings:
Om Namoh Bhagvatey Vasudevaya, Dhanvantraye Amritkalashaye
Sarvamaya Vinashaye Trilokanathaya, Sri Mahavishnave Swaha.
Benefits Of Performing Dhanteras Puja
Connected with 99Pandit for the first time - everything went smoothly. On the auspicious day of Dhanteras, we received Goddess Lakshmi's blessings. The puja took a bit longer than expected, but the pandit explained everything properly.
We had our Dhanteras Puja done in Delhi, and everything went very smoothly. Pandit ji arrived on time with all the required samgiri and did puja very nicely. Our whole family felt very positive and blessed.
I am seriously impressed with the Pandit service with 99Pandot. The rituals were performed as per our traditions and community preference. My father was quite pleased with the whole Puja experience as well. Thanks, 99Pandit, for a seamless Dhanteras Puja!
