The main aim of Mundan is Shuddhikaran or purification. According to the Vedic texts, the hair a child is born with carries the characteristics and liabilities of past births. By shaving this hair, the child is allegorically freed of the past.
Scientifically, it is felt that the sunlight that hits the scalp following the shaving stimulates the nerves and enhances brain development, and in terms of spirituality, it represents the transitioning of the child into a life of purity and discipline.
To do a traditionally correct Mundan Sanskar, follow these simplified steps:
1. Muhurat and Venue:
Consult an expert to locate a good Muhurat called Shubh Muhurat. The ritual is best undertaken at a temple, at the bank of a holy river, or at home in a sanctified place. During the ritual, the child must face East.
2. Ganesh Puja and Hawan:
Start with Ganesh Puja, where obstacles are removed to allow a small Hawan (fire ceremony) to invoke the deities and the Sun God.
The priest recites Ayushya Mantras and prays that the child should live a long life and be healthy.
3. The Tonsure (Hair Cutting):
The Tonsure begins with the barber (Nai) beginning the process of hair removal as the Pandit begins to recite certain Vedic hymns.
A small tuft of hair, the Shikha, is traditionally left at the top of the head to protect the most sensitive part of the brain.
4. Cooling and Immersion:
The child is made to wash his head in Gangajal and apply a cooling paste of Sandalwood and Turmeric to heal the head and soothe the senses.
The shaved hair is then gathered, combined with flour or cow dung, and then reverently placed in a running river (Visarjan).
5. Blessings and Charity:
The ceremony ends with the child being blessed by the elders. Brahmin Bhoj and giving gifts to poor people to celebrate the successful performance of Sanskar are customary.
Vedic Reference: The marriage ceremony is primarily based on the Vivaha Sukta from the Rigveda (Book 10, Hymn 85), which describes the divine marriage of Surya (daughter of the Sun) and is considered the prototype of all Hindu marriages.
