The Teharavi puja, also called Trayodashi, is one of the most important rituals in the journey of the soul and the process of Hindu mourning.
It shows the formal conclusion of the initial mourning time, leading the family from a state of deep grief toward spiritual closure and the balance of normalcy.
This is a complicated and highly symbolic ceremony, and normally needs to be directed by knowledgeable Vedic Pandits.
Typically, it goes through the following steps:
Shuddhikaran (Purification): The day starts with a complete cleaning of the house. This may involve a Havan (sacred fire ceremony) and sprinkling of holy water to eliminate the Sutak (period of impurity) with death.
Brahman Bhoj: A significant part of Teharavi is feeding Brahmins and the needy. The merit (Punya) obtained through this food giving is believed to reach the soul, which will give it power and fulfilment to continue through its journey.
Daan (Charity): Families express their gratitude by giving the deceased important things like clothes, umbrellas, lamps, or even grain (Sajja Daan) to make his or her life in the afterlife more comfortable.
Shanti Path: The ceremony is completed with a group prayer of peace, and friends and extended family come to offer their final goodbyes, and the formal mourning period is over.
Vedic Reference: The marriage ceremony is primarily based on the Vivaha Sukta from the Rigveda (Book 10, Hymn 85), which describes the divine marriage of Surya (daughter of the Sun) and is considered the prototype of all Hindu marriages.
