The Asthi visarjan term is derived from two Sanskrit words – Asthi, which means bones or ashes, and ‘Visarjan’, which means immersion or release. The ritual is performed on the 3rd, 7th, or 10th day after cremation, as it’s believed to be the final goodbye to the departed soul.
It is thought that immersing the ashes in the Ganga, the Yamuna, and the holy river cleanse the soul and helps to attain moksha. A trained pandit performs Vedic mantras and rituals during the ceremony to assure the soul’s peaceful journey.

Asthi visarjan puja is a Hindu last rite ritual performed just after cremation, where the collected bones and ashes of the deceased are immersed in holy water, mainly the Ganga.
The puja has deep spiritual significance as it is thought to liberate the soul from the cycle of birth and death, blessing them with eternal moksha and peace.
Sankalp Puja: The expert pandit starts the ritual by taking a sankalp, mentioning the name and gotra of the soul, seeking divine blessings for the puja.
Asthi Sanchay: Get the bones and ashes from the cremation site carefully and keep them in a copper or clay pot filled with Ganga jal.
Asthi Visarjan: The ashes and bones of the deceased are gently immersed in the holy river, Ganga, by family members with prayers, led by the pandit with mantra chanting.
Ganga Aarti & Pushp Anjali: The ritual completes with Ganga arti and flower offerings, showing the final goodbye and praying for the soul’s moksha.
Shanti Path & Mantras: A Sacred shanti mantra is recited by the pandit to cleanse the environment and seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu and pitrus.
Tarpan Vidhi: The family of the deceased honours them by offering water with sesame seeds and flowers, showing gratitude and seeking their blessings.
Pind Daan: On the 11th day, rice balls called pindas are offered to the ancestors on the riverbank for their peaceful journey.
Vedic Reference: The marriage ceremony is primarily based on the Vivaha Sukta from the Rigveda (Book 10, Hymn 85), which describes the divine marriage of Surya (daughter of the Sun) and is considered the prototype of all Hindu marriages.
