Nishkraman, which means ‘Stepping out’, is the 4th of the sixteen major sanskar in Hindu culture. It’s typically conducted in the 4th month after birth.
The main goal of this ritual is to formally meet the infant with the five primordial elements and celestial bodies – mainly Sun and Moon.
This is a prayer for the child’s good health, long life, sharp intellect, and the ability to withstand the external environment.

The journey of a child in the Vedic culture is shown by multiple ‘Sanskaras’ or rituals of passage that reconcile the soul with the real world.
Nishkraman sanskar is significant, as it shows the child’s switch from the safe atmosphere of the home to the vastness of the universe.
The ritual is performed to be gentle yet religiously important. This is a simplified guide to the steps:
1. Selection of Auspicious Time: Discuss with your pandit Shubh Muhurat depending on the child’s lunar birth star.
2. Purification & Dressing: The child is given a traditional bath and dressed in new, comfortable clothes. A tilak is applied to the forehead.
3. Ganesh Puja: The puja starts with honouring Lord Ganesh to eliminate problems and ensure the path of the child is clear and successful.
4. The First Exit: The child’s father or maternal uncle holds the child to the entrance of the home. A square area in the courtyard is usually adorned with Rangoli and sanctified with Vedic mantras.
5. Celestial Salutation: Based on whether it is day or night, the child is instructed to see the Sun or the Moon.
The father chants particular mantras, praying to the lord that the child gets the shine like the Sun and the stability of the Moon.
6. Earthly Connection: The child’s feet are briefly and gently touched to the ground, indicating their first connection with Mother Earth (Bhumi).
7. Blessings: The puja completes with the elders sprinkling purified water (Ganga Jal) on the child and presenting Aashirwad for a bold and healthy life forward.
Vedic Reference: The marriage ceremony is primarily based on the Vivaha Sukta from the Rigveda (Book 10, Hymn 85), which describes the divine marriage of Surya (daughter of the Sun) and is considered the prototype of all Hindu marriages.
