The Holika Dahan is a Hindu cleansing ceremony that is practiced on the eve of Holi, as the victory of truth and faith over evil. Mentioned on the Vedas and Puranas, the ritual of the bonfire is conducted to seek protection with the gods, wealth, spiritual cleansing, and to eliminate the negative energy before the spring.
Holika Puja in Hinduism is a sacred fire ritual observed on the evening of the full moon night (Purnima) of the Phalguna month. The ritual marks the arrival of the spring season and symbolizes the victory of good over evil.
That’s because of the legend behind this. As per the mythology, there was a beloved devotee of Lord Vishnu named Prahlad. Hiranyakashipou was his father, and he opposed Lord Vishnu. Therefore, he ordered his sister Holika to kill Prahlad.
Holika was granted the boon that protects her from fire. She took a Prahlad and sat within the flames. With the divine grace of Lord Vishnu, Holika was burnt in the ashes, and Prahlad came out of the fire without any injury.
The story is a live example of how truth and righteousness can never be overshadowed. Performing this puja acts as spritiual cleansing tool to celebrate the festival of colours.
The Holika Puja is primarily performed on an auspicious muhurat in the evening before Holi on a good muhurat. It is a ritual of a set symbolic fire and prayer led by a trained and experienced pandit.
1. Holika Sthapana & Sankalp: At the place of puja, a sacred material or a symbolic model is created represented Holika. Now devotees take a vow to perform the ritual with a pure heart.
2. Prahlad Pujan: A symbolic figure of Prahlad is worshipped near the fire while chanting the Lord Vishnu mantra. It reminds devotees that truth and righteousness always prevail over evil.
3. Holika Dahan & Parikrama: A fire is set in the auspicious muhurat. Devotess circles the fire (Parikrama) and does prayers.
4. Arpan & Water Offerings: Devotess the make offerings of things such as cotton thread, turmeric, grains, coconut, and ghee to the fire. Water is later poured on the base of the bonfire.
5. Bhasma Dharana & Shanti Mantras: A fire subsides, and individuals carry a small percentage of holy ash to their house. The ceremony is brought to an end by offering prayers and seeking blessings to bring a new beginning.
Vedic Reference: The marriage ceremony is primarily based on the Vivaha Sukta from the Rigveda (Book 10, Hymn 85), which describes the divine marriage of Surya (daughter of the Sun) and is considered the prototype of all Hindu marriages.
