A Divine Beginning: Your Guide to Namkaran Puja

Welcoming a newborn into the family is a moment of immense joy and gratitude. In the sixteen Hindu Smaskaras, Namkaran Puja is very important as it marks the baby’s spiritual and social identity.

It is not only about naming the child but also involves calling upon the divine grace for a fruitful and prosperous life.

Performing with Vedic authenticity will ensure that the life journey of a child is filled with positivity and success.

What is Namkaran Puja?

Namkaran Puja alsi called Namkaran Sankar, is a traditional Hindu ceremony performed to formally declare the newborn’s name.

It is usually observed on the 11th or 12th day after the birth. The ceremony invokes the divine grace for the child’s long life, health, and prosperity.

In this sacred ritual, the name is often selected depending on the baby’s birth nakshatra and horoscope to ensure harmony with planetary influence. In other words, this ritual is a symbol of identity and the introduction of the child to society.

How is Namakaran Puja Performed?

The Namkaran ceremony is a blend of Vedic rituals, spiritual devotion, and family traditions. Here’s the key rituals of the naming puja:

1. Preparation & Timing: Generally done on the 11th or 12 th day, a pandit determines the most auspicious Muhurat and starting letter of the name based on the baby’s birth star.

2. Punyahavachan (Purification): While chanting a certain mantra, the pandit sprinkles holy water (Gangajal) to purify the house, the baby, and the mother.

3. Ganesh & Graha Pujan: The main rituals begin with offering prayers to Lord Ganesha for smoother completion of the puja and are followed by the Navagraha puja to remove any birth-related hurdles.

4. Whispering the Name: A father or paternal aunt (Bua) whispers the chosen name into the right ear of the baby, generally using a betel leaf or a golden ring.

5. The Cradle Ceremony: Now the child is put in a decorated cradle (Palna), and family members sing traditional songs and offer their blessings.

6. Havan & Ashirwad: A fire is lit up in the havan kund to purify the atmosphere, which is followed by the elder touching the baby with grains or gold for abundance.

Vedic Reference: The marriage ceremony is primarily based on the Vivaha Sukta from the Rigveda (Book 10, Hymn 85), which describes the divine marriage of Surya (daughter of the Sun) and is considered the prototype of all Hindu marriages.
