Navratri Puja is a sacred Hindu festival that honours Goddess Durga in her nine divine forms over nine auspicious nights.
Celebrated with great enthusiasm, the nine-night is all about devotion, fasting, offering prayers to the divine feminine energy, garba night, and spiritual renewal. This piece will help you know about Navratri Puja in detail.
The term “Navratri” derives from the Sanskrit word “nava”, which means nine and “ratri” refers to nine nights.
It is a vibrant festival that honours nights of devotion to the nine forms of Goddess Durga, each symbolizing power, virtue, and wisdom.
As per the Hindu scriptures, it marks the victory of the Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura to restore balance and peace in the Universe.
Performing fast, rituals, and prayers on this day helps devotees seek inner strength, wisdom, prosperity, and harmony.
1. Ghatasthapana (Kalash Sthapana): It starts with the placing of a Kalash of holy water, seeds of barley and soil to invoke Maa Durga.
2. Akhand Jyot: A ghee lamp is lit and kept burning during the complete Navratri time.
3. Durga Saptashati / Daily Path: Devotees sit in a quiet space to recite or listen to the Durga Saptashati and chant mantras dedicated to each form of feminine energy.
4. Daily Worship & Offerings: Rituals like cleaning the idol, offering flowers, kumkum, and sweets to the deity are performed in the morning and evening. Prayers are done to gain good health, wealth, and strength.
5. Maha Ashtami Havan & Kanya Pujan: Special rituals like havan and honouring young girls as an incarnation of the Goddess are done by devotees on the eighth and ninth day.
6. Visarjan / Closing Rituals: On the last day, the kalash and idols are immersed respectfully. It marks the completion of the spiritual cycle and the continued blessing of Maa Durga.
Vedic Reference: The marriage ceremony is primarily based on the Vivaha Sukta from the Rigveda (Book 10, Hymn 85), which describes the divine marriage of Surya (daughter of the Sun) and is considered the prototype of all Hindu marriages.
