Tripindi Shradh Puja is a Hindu ritual performed to bring ultimate peace and liberation to a departed soul whose post-death rites remain incomplete.
When the rites for three regular years are missed, it leads to Pitru Dosha, causing repeated hurdles or ancestral disturbance.
Performing this “Kamya Shradh” puja helps release the soul from the earthly plane and restore family harmony.
Unlike other Shradhs done for certain family members, Tripindi Shradh is a specialised ritual conducted to appease ancestors from the three generations.
The term “Tripindi” refers to offering three pindas (sacred rice balls) to the ancestor’s soul remain unsettled due to unnatural death or improper Shradh rituals.
As per the Garuda Purana, each person is born with three spiritual debts: Dev Rin (debt to God), Rishi Rin (debt to the sages), and Pitru Rin (debt to ancestors ).
Tripindi Shradha is one of the key rituals to repay the Pitu Rin. Doing this puja at holy Teerth places like Gayam Trimbakeshwar, or Prayagraj, is considered highly beneficial.
It frees devotees from ancestral karmic burden and brings long-term relief from Pitru Dosha-related life challenges.
The Tripindi Shradha Vidhi is a detailed process that must be done under the guidance of a Vedic Pandit to ensure its effectiveness. Below is a step-by-step process for this puja:
1. Sankalap & Shuddhikaran: The ritual begins with a holy dip in sacred rivers to purify the body and mind. Then, devotees take a vow to perform the rite with devotion for ancestral’s peace.
2. Kalash Sthapana: A sacred pot is placed to invoke Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva, as they are presiding deities.
3. Triple Pinda Daan: It is a key ritual where three rice balls (pindas) mixed with ghee, sesame seeds, and honey are offered on a leaf to the ancestors of three generations.
4. Tarpan & Arghya: Water with black seasame are presented while the pandit chant clear mantra to quench the thirst of the forefathers.
5. Homam (Fire ritual): A fire is lit up in the havan khund, and items like ghee and holy herbs are offered while chanting a mantra to seek peace for the departed soul.
6. Brahman Bhojan: The ritual concludes with offering food, clothes, or dakshina to Brahmins, which is believed to reach directly to ancestors. It completes the cycle of Karmin healing.
Vedic Reference: The marriage ceremony is primarily based on the Vivaha Sukta from the Rigveda (Book 10, Hymn 85), which describes the divine marriage of Surya (daughter of the Sun) and is considered the prototype of all Hindu marriages.
