Durga Puja is one of the significant celebrations of divine feminine power and the victory of Goddess durga over the buffalo demon, Mahishasura.
Showing the victory of good over evil, the five-day celebration is a blend of rigorous Vedic customs, soul-stirring devotion, and vibrant cultural heritage that converts the atmosphere into a spiritual grace.
Durga Puja is also called as Shardiya Navaratri, a vedic tradition dedicated to seeking the mother goddess. It is considered that during the days, the goddess gets down to earth to bless her followers.
The celebration is not just a ritual but a spiritual journey – moving from the awakening of the soul to the immersion of negativity, completing in the realization of universal peace and strength.
Preparing for Durga Puja includes a sequence of precise. Vedic steps that need physical purity and mental concentration.
As grand celebrations are guided by priests, the core significance can be attained through these fundamental steps:
Bodhon (The Awakening): The puja starts with seeking the goddess in a wood-apple (bilva) tree, showing the awakening of consciousness.
Adhibas & Ghat Sthapana: Setting up the sacred pot filled with holy water and mango leaves over it, which acts as the physical vessel for the deity’s divine presence.
Pushpanjali (Floral Offering): The followers observe fasting until they present flowers and wood-apple leaves while pronouncing certain Sanskrit mantras to invoke the Mother’s security.
Sandhi Puja: Practiced at the exact time where Maha Ashtami ends and Maha Navami begins. It consists of lighting 108 lamps and presenting 108 lotus flowers to please the Goddess in her fiercest form, Chamunda.
Homa (Fire Ritual): The observance of a sacred Yagna where offerings are made into the havan kund to cleanse the atmosphere and the inner self.
Sindur Khela & Visarjan: To complete the ritual, married women on the last day offer vermilion to the Goddess, followed by the immersion of the idol, depicting the return of the Divine to the formless eternal.
Vedic Reference: The marriage ceremony is primarily based on the Vivaha Sukta from the Rigveda (Book 10, Hymn 85), which describes the divine marriage of Surya (daughter of the Sun) and is considered the prototype of all Hindu marriages.
