Saraswati Puja is a popularly celebrated ritual to honour the goddess of learning and wisdom. It helps devotees awaken the intellect and seek divine guidance in their learning journey. Here’s a quick guide to understand this puja and how it is performed.
Saraswati Puja is mainly observed during the Basant Panchami to seek blessing of Goddess Saraswati. Being representative of speech and flow of awareness, she is seen in a beautiful white saree on a white lotus, symbolizing purity and ultimate truth.
For students preparing for an exam or a person in a creative field, performing this puja sharpens the mind, removes ignorance, and brings academic success.
1. Sankalpa & Setting the Space
The ritual begins with the cleansing of the puja area and placing the idol or picture of Goddess Saraswati. With the help of a pandit, devotees take a vow while mentioning their name, gotra, and the purpose of the puja.
2. Blessing the Tools of Learning
Pens, books, and musical instruments are put in front of Godess feets. This step is mainly performed to honour tools of knowledge and seek the divine grace in works and studies.
3. Chanting & Floral Offerings
Offerings of fresh flowers (Pushpanjali) like marigolds or Palash, fruits, and sweets are made. In addition to this, there is a recitation of a powerful Saraswati mantra by a pandit.
4. Vidyarambham
It is a core ritual of the ceremony to mark and bless the beginning of the education. In this step, a young child writes their very first letter of the alphabet with Pandit’s guidance.
5. Final Aarti and Pasrasd Distribution
A ghee diya and an incense stick are lighted for the last aarti ritual; devotional songs are also sung alongside. At last, a parasad is also handed out to all our family members in order to instil wisdom into our family.
Vedic Reference: The marriage ceremony is primarily based on the Vivaha Sukta from the Rigveda (Book 10, Hymn 85), which describes the divine marriage of Surya (daughter of the Sun) and is considered the prototype of all Hindu marriages.
