In Hindu tradition, honouring our ancestors is believed to be one of the sacred duties that strengthens the foundation of the family.
While each Tithi is dedicated to paying gratitude to our lineage, Bharani Shraddha Puja is gold opportunity for those looking to offer peace to a departed soul.
It becomes even more important when done in the Bharani Nakashtra, which is a constellation associated with change and liberation. Now, let’s learn a bit more about this puja.
Bharani Shraddha Puja is a specialized ritual conducted during the Bharani Nakshatra, which falls during the Pitru Paksha.
This day is said to be ruled by Lord Yama, who is the celestial deity of dharma and death.
As Lord Yama rules this lunar mansion, performing Sharddha during this period is highly effective to guide the departed soul towards liberation with ease.
Unlike regular Tithi Shraddha, Maha Bharani is mainly designed to get rid of “Pitru Dosha” or to honour those who recently passed away.
The puja is focues in cleaning the soul path and ensure departed souls are not just remembered but are free from the cycle of birth and death.
In fact, doing Bharani Shraddha Puja with the right vidhi and mantra is said to be as significant as performing an ancestral ritual in Gaya.
The Bharani Shraddha Puja involves a number of steps that need to be accomplished with devotion and a clean heart.
This starts with the Sankalp, where the individual announces his intention to pay homage to his ancestors. Following this is the invocation of the Pitru Devatas.
This is followed by Pind Daan offering, where a rice ball combined with sesame seeds is offered to the departed soul as a sign of physical nourishment.
Now, a Tarpan (water infused with Kusha grass) is offered to satisfy the ancestors’ thirst. In some cases, a small fire ritual is also performed to multiply the spiritual benefit of the ritual.
Finally, to conclude the ceremony, Brahmin Bhojan, charity, and Dakshina are offered to a pandit. Plus, prayers are also done to seek the blessings for family well-being.
Vedic Reference: The marriage ceremony is primarily based on the Vivaha Sukta from the Rigveda (Book 10, Hymn 85), which describes the divine marriage of Surya (daughter of the Sun) and is considered the prototype of all Hindu marriages.
