Let’s start!
According to Panchang, the Ashwin Amavasya 2026 falls on 10th October, 2026. This day is ideal to seek blessings from ancestors and pray for their peaceful afterlife.
Avoidable Muhurats:
The very next day, Shardiya Navratri begins, and this Amavasya is often used to cleanse the house and make it pristine for the welcome of Maa Durga by the devotees.
Feeding the underprivileged and doing charity (daan) to the needy is felt righteous on this day.
The Ashwin Amavasya, also known as Sarva Pitru Amavasya, is the most important day of the year to honour your ancestors and to pray for their souls to be at peace.
The other purpose of this day depicts that on this day, the shradh paksha is completed, and all the ancestors return to pitru loka after blessing their sons.
Doing charity (daan) to the needy people of clothes, food, or any other essentials is considered ethical.
Offerings of grains and water can also be made to the birds/animals. It’s the most suitable time to get bound again with the spiritual energy present in your body, but still not explored.
The mind comes to a calming state after practising meditation or by taking a holy bath in sacred rivers on this day. Sacred Rivers like the Ganga River, the Yamuna, etc.
Many worshippers offer water and prayers to the peepal tree on this day as it is considered a residence place for the Hindu trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh).
The rituals start from early morning, the daily morning duties are performed early, and then the preparation to honour the ancestors begins.
Let’s see how they are followed:
The daily routine of early morning starts early on this day, the devotee prepares himself, cleans himself, and wears yellow clothes to perform the puja.
Then the worship place is purified, cleaned, and the essential setup is arranged.
A proper offering of flowers, deepa, dhupa, and water is made to ancestors. The family tries again to connect to their ancestors by taking their name and doing prayers.
This ritual is performed to finally say goodbye to them and pray for their peaceful afterlife.
On this day, an offering is made of barley and water to the ancestors. This offering is made to seek their blessings and feel their presence, which is truly felt while doing this offering.
The senior male of the family doing the ritual is asked to wear a sacred white thread on the right shoulder.
This thread indicates purity and is compulsory to wear so as to perform all the rituals with purity and decency.
The devotees remember their ancestors and ask for forgiveness by reciting some specific mantras and by praying. They express their gratitude towards them and pray for their peace and liberation.
The rituals are observed by serving food to the brahmins; it is also important that the sesame seeds are spread around the place where the brahmins are seated.
By offering food and clothes, the sign is that the family wants their ancestors to be happy and bless them.
After all the arrangements, the brahmins are invited for lunch and honoured with full respect and service.
The brahmins are honoured by the male of the family, by washing their feet first, asking them to sit on a purified and clean place, and then serving them food (as prashad).
The famous story of Ashwin Amavasya is related to Karna from the Mahabharata. It enlights the importance of offering food rather than money and gold.
The legend Karna
It is a story from the Mahabharata period, when the legend karna died during a war and went to heaven. He was welcomed with respect.
He sat down to have his food, where he witnessed a very weird thing. Karna saw how everything started turning into gold and silver. He got gold and diamonds as food.
He got confused and was very hungry! After seeing all of this, he asked Indra, the king of the gods,” Why am I being treated like this here? I was the most charitable person on earth!”
Indra replied; I know, Karna, how much you have offered coins and gold to the needy, but never offered any grain or food to your ancestors because you didn’t know who they were.
You never performed such rituals, and now in your afterlife, you are wealthy but can not nourish your soul.
Hearing all of this, Karna realised his mistake and asked for a second chance to correct it. He asked Lord Yama (the god of death) to make him return to the earth to fix his mistake.
Lord Yama gave him permission to go back for 15 days. During these 15 days, Karna performed the rituals, offered water (tarpan) and food to the needy and to the brahmins in the name of his ancestors.
Now this time, when he returned after doing the complete rituals, he was offered food and water, and he felt peaceful and eternal thereafter.
The story has made it clear how important it is to respect and maintain a connection with the elders.
The rituals are not only performed to say goodbye to the ancestors but also to clear the debts of past life and to get rid of pitra dosha as well.
Such rituals are important to practice as they fill the gap between the physical and spiritual worlds.
This ritual is believed to free the soul from the departed body and to make sure that they move toward moksha (liberation).
The charity helps in getting rid of pitru dosha, which is believed to delay your important work in life, be it financial, starting a new venture, or marriage.
It is believed that when the ancestor’s soul is satisfied, they bless the descendants, and performing the brahmin ritual helps the descendants to do so.
From the morning ritual till the last ritual, the in-between time says positive and the environment is filled with calm and peace, which helps the family connect with their ancestors and feel their presence in their heart.
| Dos | Don’ts |
| Perform morning rituals | Avoid non-veg |
| Ogeer water with seeds in it | Do not buy new things |
| Honour brahmins | Avoid alcohol |
| Do charity | Avoid arguments |
| Be genuine with the rituals | Don’t avoid needy people |
| Light a small lamp | Avoid nails and hair |
These points are crucial to keep in mind while performing other rituals. The dos and don’ts are given to confirm that the observance gets completed timely and with pure intentions, so that the purpose of getting blessings and praying for the ancestors doesn’t go to waste.
To conclude, it is a day of gratitude and asking for forgiveness. Ashwin Amavasya 2026 is not only a date in the Hindu calendar, but a second chance to fix your mistakes, just like Karna did.
This is the best day when you can finally say goodbye to your ancestors, make them know how thankful you are to them, and you still miss them.
Doing charity and offering in this period can make your sins clear and can also satisfy the souls of your forefathers.
Serving food and honouring the brahmins on this can be counted as a virtuous deed of yours. Respectfully inviting brahmins and serving them with honesty and decency will help you seek blessings from your ancestors.
