The journey of a soul is eternal, but the physical departure from this world is an emotional moment of profound transition.
In Hinduism, Antim Sankar is a sacred duty performed to honour the departed soul and ensure the soul’s peaceful journey towards liberation (Moksha).
The puja symbolises the completion of life’s earthly journey and the transition of the soul to the next realm.
When done with devotion and right vidhi, the ritual brings emotional closure to the family while fulfilling their duties.
The Antim Sankar or the last rite is one of the most significant sacraments among the 16th and final Samakaras in Hinduism.
According to ancient scriptures, it is believed that the body is composed of five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space.
The puja focuses on returning the physical body to these elements. It is believed that without this ceremony, the soul remains restless.
Antim Sankar Ceremony serves two main purposes:
Conducting Antim Sankar requires following a certain Vedic protocol and expert guidance. Here’s a general step-by-step guide followed by the pandit during Antim Sanskar:
1. Preparation: Initially, the body is bathed, dressed in new clothes, and placed on a wooden pyre. Holy water (Ganga Jal) and a Tulsi leaf are put in the mouth.
2. The Procession: Led by the eldest son, the family carries the body to the cremation ground while chanting “Ram Naam Satya Hai”.
3. Mukhagni: The eldest son or male family members takes a holy bath, walks around the pyre, and lights it, particularly from the mouth.
4. Asthi Sanchayan: Around 24 hours after the cremation, the family gathers all the ashes and bones (Asthi).
5. Asthi Visarjan: Now, ashes are immersed in holy rivers like the Ganga, representing the soul’s liberation.
6. Mourning Period: This period mainly lasts for 10 to 13 days, during which certain rituals and dietary restrictions are followed by the family members.
7. Final Rites: On the 12th and 13th day, a Pind Daan ceremony is conducted for the peaceful soul’s transition to the ancestral realm (Pitru Lok).
Vedic Reference: The marriage ceremony is primarily based on the Vivaha Sukta from the Rigveda (Book 10, Hymn 85), which describes the divine marriage of Surya (daughter of the Sun) and is considered the prototype of all Hindu marriages.
